Biography
Jacob Astley, 16th Baron Hastings, born in 1797, was raised amid Norfolk’s Astleys and, after representing his county in the Commons, succeeded to the venerable barony; he devoted himself to estate improvement, to advancing agricultural practice, and to sustaining the parish charities of his neighbourhood.
He died in 1859, leaving a legacy of local generosity that endures at the Church of St Peter in Melton Constable, where his memorial recalls a dignified servant of county and crown.
