Biography

Jacob Bell, born in 1810, combined his training as a pharmaceutical chemist with an unyielding sense of public duty, helping to found the Pharmaceutical Society and advocating for the rights and responsibilities of those who supplied medicines to the nation. His expertise and integrity made him a trusted voice in Parliament, where he represented the people of St Albans and pressed for legislation to improve standards in the medical and chemical trades.

Bell’s work laid foundations for the professionalization of pharmacy; his campaigns helped establish the Pharmacy Act of 1852 and promoted science education for all. Those who visited Woodbury Park Cemetery remember him not only for his political service but for the warmth with which he supported colleagues and constituents alike.
