Jacques Villon

1875–1963 (age 88)

Biography

Jacques Villon was a luminous presence in the turn-of-the-century Paris art world, whose sensitivity as an illustrator and painter helped give shape to pioneering modernist languages. He explored printmaking and painting with an unerring sense of rhythm, balancing the intimacy of illustration with the structural rigor of abstraction.

He remained devoted to mentoring younger artists and to the artistic life of Rouen, where the monumental cemetery now quietly welcomes those who come to remember a lifetime of creative inquiry.
