Jake Madden

Biography

Jake Madden (1865–1948) brought the early spirit of association football to Prague, shaping the training ground for a generation of players at a time when the sport was taking root in Bohemia. His approach combined a keen tactical eye with an insistence on discipline, encouraging young athletes to see football as both a craft and a communal pursuit.

Across decades of work, Madden became a trusted mentor whose routines and standards echoed well beyond the pitch, leaving behind a cadre of coaches and players who revered his leadership as they carried forward the game’s traditions at Olšany Cemetery, where his memory rests.
