Biography

James Banning was a pioneering African American aviator who achieved remarkable milestones in early aviation history. Born in 1900, Banning became one of the first Black pilots to earn his wings and made significant contributions to aviation development during a period when racial barriers severely limited opportunities for African Americans in the field. His courage and determination helped break down racial prejudices in aviation and inspired future generations of Black aviators.

Banning's aviation career was marked by numerous achievements and record-breaking flights, though his life was tragically cut short in 1933 at the age of thirty-two. Despite his brief career, his impact on aviation history was profound and lasting.
