James Busby
1802–1871 (age 69)
Biography
James Busby began his working life as a businessperson before embracing colonial responsibilities that brought him to New Zealand, where he crafted the Declaration of Independence and fostered a spirit of negotiation between settlers and Māori leaders. His calm diplomacy and steadfast sense of fairness echoed the thoughtful businessman he remained, even after returning to London.
In later years he continued to advocate for careful stewardship of imperial affairs, and he was laid to rest in West Norwood Cemetery, remembered by colleagues for the quiet steadiness with which he approached public life.
