James Catnach

1792–1841 (age 49)

Biography

James Catnach built a small press in Seven Dials that produced cheap broadsides, ballads, and news sheets, giving a voice to the crowded streets of London and making him a household name even after his shop burned in 1813.

Through his energetic print shop he kept readers informed with songs, couplets, and startling reports, ensuring that working people could afford both information and entertainment before his death in 1841 and interment at Highgate Cemetery.
