Biography

James E. O'Hara overcame the scars of enslavement to become a lawyer and advocate, eventually representing North Carolina in the U.S. Congress.

In Washington he pressed for civil rights, fair treatment of veterans, and the enforcement of Reconstruction amendments, later continuing to counsel his community and mentor younger lawyers, and he now rests in Greenwood Cemetery.
