Biography
James Henry Gillis devoted much of his life to the United States Navy, serving on the high seas and in port, mentoring young officers, and advancing the training that kept American commerce and defense secure.
His calm demeanor and insistence on readiness endeared him to crews, and even after leaving active command he stayed engaged in the Navy's professional community and in preserving its history.
