Lawyer and U.S. Representative
Biography
James Hodge Codding's legal training prepared him for the deliberative work of the U.S. House, where he represented his district with a commitment to fiscal responsibility and support for the growing industries of the time. His colleagues knew him as a man who listened before speaking, ensuring that the concerns of his hometown had a deliberate advocate.
Away from the capital he focused on strengthening the schools and families that had supported him, often appearing at civic gatherings to encourage the next generation of voters and workers, and those who walk among the stones of Oak Hill Cemetery still recall how he encouraged their ambitions.
