Biography

James Hugh Smith-Barry (1748–1801) was a gentleman of Great Budworth whose stewardship of the estate brought attentive care to parish life and the nearby St Mary and All Saints' Church. He was known locally for encouraging the repair of the church fabric and for sharing the harvest with those less fortunate, confirming his sense of duty to the community.

When he died in 1801, his neighbors remembered a hospitable figure who valued the gentle rhythms of country life and who believed that prosperity should be shared; his memorial records the gratitude of Great Budworth for his generous oversight.
