Biography

James John Corbett, known to many as the 'Gentleman Jim', rose from humble beginnings to become a master of the sweet science, relying on quick feet, calm strategy, and an abiding respect for his opponents; his victory in the 1892 championship and his writings invited a new generation to understand boxing as art as well as contest.

After he stepped out of the ring he embraced opportunities on the stage and in civic causes, teaching young athletes to cultivate discipline with compassion, and his friends continue to celebrate his wit and generosity near his resting place at Cypress Hills Cemetery.
