Biography

James Key Caird, born in 1837, found success as an entrepreneur in the Dundee jute industry and used his fortune to support scientific and humanitarian causes. He believed deeply in the power of exploration and education, and he generously funded expeditions and memorials that celebrated courage and scholarship.

His most famous contribution was his support for Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Antarctic expedition, ensuring that the spirit of that venture lived on even after his own death in 1916.
