Biography

James Lawrence Cabell (1813–1889) was a distinguished physician and professor of surgery at the University of Virginia who expanded medical education and public health knowledge on the eve of modern medicine. He was an early advocate for sanitary reform, guiding the public mind toward the study of disease prevention, and he authored influential works that brought scientific insights into harmony with moral purpose.

Through his mentoring of medical students and civic leadership, he left an enduring imprint on Charlottesville and beyond, and he is buried in the University of Virginia Cemetery and Columbarium.
