James Markham Ambler

Biography

James Markham Ambler (1848–1881) was a dedicated naval surgeon who answered the call of exploration when he joined the ill-fated Jeannette expedition. His medical skill and courage sustained shipmates through hardships far from home, and even as sickness broke his own body he remained a source of comfort and steadiness to those around him.
