Biography

James Mason Hutchings, born in 1820, carved a notable path as a publisher and pioneer, sharing the wonders of Yosemite with readers near and far and helping to awaken a thirst for preserving America’s wild places. His enthusiasm for storytelling and travel helped countless people imagine the grandeur of the Sierra Nevada.

He passed in 1902 and was laid to rest in Yosemite Cemetery, where visitors may still pause to honor the tireless advocate who helped bring the national landscape to the public imagination.
