James Neild

1744–1814 (age 70)

Biography

James Neild built his fortune in Chelsea yet never forgot the obligations it carried, spending himself on the improvement of prisons, visiting inmates, and speaking on their behalf in print and before public audiences in order to relieve suffering.

He died in 1814, and the committees he inspired and the prisoners he aided testified to the unexpected kindness of a man whose business acumen was matched by compassion.
