James Pierpont, born in 1822, became a composer whose songs blended spirited melody with the popular tastes of mid-19th century America. He achieved lasting fame with his 1857 tune that would become known as 'Jingle Bells,' delighting audiences with its jaunty rhythm and merry lyrics.
