1815–1897 (age 82)

Biography

James Rood Doolittle, born in 1815, studied law and brought his conviction for justice to the young state of Wisconsin, eventually representing it in the United States Senate from 1857 to 1869. His moderate, thoughtful voice guided the Senate through tumultuous years as he sought to balance the demands of unity with the principles held dear by his constituents.

After leaving the Senate he returned to legal practice, later serving on the bench and counseling his community until his death in 1897, when he was laid to rest at Mound Cemetery with deep gratitude for a career of public service.
