Biography
James Sherman, born in 1796, was a committed abolitionist who spoke up for the enslaved and sought to rally others to the cause of freedom and equality. His moral clarity and compassionate witness helped keep the abolitionist movement in public view during trying decades.
He lived to see progress toward emancipation and in retirement remained a calm presence for friends, finally laid to rest at Abney Park Cemetery with the gratitude of those he inspired.
