James Terry Gardiner

Biography

James Terry Gardiner (1842-1912) was a geographer and surveyor whose explorations of the American West helped open the Sierra Nevada, Humboldt River, and Colorado River basins to scientific understanding. His work with the U.S. Geological Survey and the California Survey provided a firm foundation for future conservation and development efforts.

He is buried in Albany Rural Cemetery, leaving behind a legacy of meticulous maps, careful writings, and a lifelong devotion to the landscapes he so carefully documented.
