Jane Cadell
1803–1883 (age 80)
Biography
Jane Cadell was known for her wise counsel in Edinburgh drawing rooms and for quietly supporting relief work during hard winters, knitting blankets and providing coal for tenants who struggled with the tolls of industry. Her friends remembered her as the kind of woman who listened before she spoke and who could organise a parish fête with as much care as she gave to her family's library.
The Dean Cemetery marker honours her gentle influence on the city, where she encouraged young women to learn bookkeeping and to read history, believing that knowledge could help them shape their own fortunes. Her memorial is a gracious reminder that quiet generosity ripples through a community long after a lifetime has closed.
