Biography

Jane Meade Welch (1854-1931) was Buffalo’s first female newspaper reporter and one of the earliest women historians in the country. She brought careful research and a quiet eloquence to both her coverage of current events and her lectures on local and national history.

Her work gave voice to stories that might otherwise have been forgotten, and she encouraged other women to pursue careers in writing and scholarship. She was laid to rest at Forest Lawn Cemetery, leaving a legacy of knowledge and encouragement.
