Jane Senior

1828–1877 (age 49)

Biography

Jane Senior was among the first women to serve in the British civil service, lending her compassion and intellect to the care of vulnerable children in Victorian London. She worked closely with charitable societies and metropolitan authorities to identify neglected youth, championing boarding-out and family placement in place of harsh industrial schools.

Senior’s pioneering efforts influenced the development of more humane regulation and inspection of poor law institutions, and she remained a steadfast advocate for social reform until her death. Today she is remembered with gratitude at Brookwood Cemetery, where her commitment to others continues to inspire.
