Biography

Jean-Antoine Félix Dissandes de Monlevade (1791–1872) was a French-born engineer who made significant contributions to Brazilian development. He brought European engineering expertise to Brazil and played an important role in infrastructure and industrial projects during the nineteenth century.

Monlevade's long career in Brazil spanned more than eight decades, during which he witnessed the nation's transformation from a colonial territory to an established empire. His legacy is preserved in the city of João Monlevade, which bears his name and reflects his contributions to Brazilian progress.
