Jerry Simpson, born in 1842 and known as "Sockless Jerry" for his plainspoken populist ways, rose from humble beginnings to serve Kansas farmers in the U.S. House of Representatives, advocating for railroad regulation and more equitable credit for struggling families.
After leaving Washington he stayed engaged with veterans' groups and local civic efforts, and his steadfast humility is remembered by those who visit his grave at Maple Grove Cemetery.
