Biography

Joan Eardley, born near 1921, transformed the landscapes and faces of her native Scotland into vivid, emotionally resonant works of art. Her charcoal studies of Glasgow children and luminous seascapes from Catterline captured both resilience and tenderness with an uncompromising authenticity.

Eardley’s dedication to truth in painting inspired generations of artists, and her voice remains present in the textures and hues she left behind. She died in 1963 and continues to be celebrated for her luminous empathy.
