Biography
Joel Tanner Hart studied the classical traditions in Italy and brought that disciplined vision to his portrait busts of American statesmen, capturing their inner resolve as well as their outward dignity. His marble figures of Andrew Jackson, Henry Clay, and others became treasured commissions in public halls and private collections.
Hart remained tied to his Kentucky roots, encouraging young artists and ensuring that the new republic possessed monuments worthy of its ideals.
