Biography

John Albert Broadus, born in 1827, became one of the leading Baptist theologians of his day after training at the University of Virginia and pastoring churches across Virginia. He went on to found the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, serving as its first president and shaping generations of ministers with his pastoral ethics and writings on preaching.

His treatises on sermon preparation and the Bible were widely read, and he remained a beloved teacher and preacher until his death in 1895; he was laid to rest at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery among fellow clergy and scholars.
