Biography

John Bascombe Lock, born in 1807, embraced a military calling and rose through the ranks as an officer whose careful preparation and calm courage inspired the men under his command, whether on parade grounds or on distant service abroad.

He was devoted to the welfare of his comrades, often attending to wounded soldiers and keeping rigorous standards that kept discipline humane, and when he died in 1842 many attested to the selfless care he had shown; his remains now rest in the peace of St Peter's Churchyard.
