Biography

John Bass was a skilled shipbuilder whose craft was essential to Britain's maritime dominance during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Born in 1752, he practiced his trade during a golden age of English shipbuilding, when naval power and merchant vessels were vital to national prosperity and commerce. His expertise would have been in high demand during this period of naval expansion.

Bass's long life of seventy-three years allowed him to witness the transformation of British shipbuilding and the rise of industrial manufacturing techniques. His burial in the Parish Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary reflects his standing in his community.
