John Bennett
1817–1889 (age 72)
Biography
John Bennett made his mark as a merchant whose judgement and fairness kept Eccles a lively market for the goods that sustained Lancashire industries, yet he never put profits above responsibility. He helped to finance the day school, supported the hospital fund, and encouraged younger tradesmen to adopt honest bookkeeping and temperance, leaving behind both economic stability and a moral standard.
The memorial in the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Eccles testifies to his partnership with the parish, where he once chaired meetings on relief for the poor and where his family worshipped. It is there that parishioners still speak of him as a man who shaped the town's prosperity without neglecting the neighbour who needed a kind word.
