John Braithwaite
1797–1870 (age 73)
Biography
John Braithwaite (1797–1870) earned recognition for co-designing the locomotive Novelty with John Ericsson for the Rainhill Trials, a daring experiment that explored the limits of steam propulsion. His inventive mind then turned to high-pressure engines for fire fighting, pumping and shipboard service, with several patents that improved safety and performance.
He persisted in refining engineers' tools, advocating for better standards of boiler construction and for the education of mechanics, while remaining a generous mentor to younger engineers who visited his workshops. He is buried at Kensal Green Cemetery.
