Biography
John Calhoun Sheppard (1850-1931) studied law and entered South Carolina politics, serving in the legislature, holding the lieutenant governor's office, and ultimately assuming the governorship in 1886 as the state sought steady leadership.
After leaving the executive office he returned to legal practice, offering counsel to younger statesmen and remaining engaged in civic life; he rests among family at Willowbrook Cemetery.
