John Clerk, Lord Eldin

Biography

John Clerk, later Lord Eldin, was born in 1757 and walked the path from Advocate to Lord of Session with a patient intellect and a ready wit, earning a reputation for fairness as he presided over delicate cases with a calm voice and an eye for equity.

He supported younger members of the bar, preserved the traditions of learning in the faculty, and, after a lifetime of service to the law, he died in 1832 and was interred in the old parish churchyard at Lasswade.
