John Echols

Biography

John Echols served as a Confederate general during the Civil War, drawing on his legal education and his knowledge of western Virginia to oversee forces defending the Shenandoah Valley and its communities.

After the conflict he returned to Winchester, resumed his legal practice, and took part in rebuilding civic life, seeking in his twilight years to promote reconciliation in the Commonwealth.
