John Gardner Wilkinson brought the art and society of ancient Egypt to Britain through patient fieldwork and a stream of lucid writings, earning him the title “the father of British Egyptology” as he recorded monuments, customs, and inscriptions with unmatched care.
His scholarship stirred a generation of readers, and he was laid to rest by the Church Of St Dingat, where parishioners still recall his voyages and writings.
