John H. Gear began his career in business before entering the political arena, serving as a U.S. Representative and later becoming Iowa's governor, where he focused on modernizing the state's infrastructure and institutions.

He capped his public service with a tenure in the United States Senate, where he advocated for responsible fiscal policy and the continued prosperity of the Midwest, leaving a legacy honored at his resting place in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
