John Hindmarsh

1785–1860 (age 75)

Biography

John Hindmarsh carved out a distinguished career as a Royal Navy officer and politician, serving as the first Governor of South Australia from 1836 to 1838 where he worked to establish civil order and lay the foundations for a new colony while still mindful of the traditional custodians of the land.

After his return he retired to the Hove area, remaining a loyal member of St Andrew's Church where he shared stories of distant seas and encouraged the parish to welcome newcomers to the expanding town.
