John Jay Phelps

Biography

John Jay Phelps (1810–1869) was a resident of Simsbury, Connecticut, whose life spanned nearly six decades of American history. Though details of his occupation and public service remain limited in the historical record, Phelps was part of the community fabric of his New England town during a period of significant national change.

He rests at Simsbury Center, among the generations of his community. Phelps's life represents the many ordinary citizens whose quiet presence and participation sustained American communities through the nineteenth century.
