Biography

John Jervis, 1st Earl of St Vincent (1735–1823) rose through the Royal Navy to become one of its most respected commanders, winning a decisive victory at Cape St Vincent in 1797 and later serving as First Lord of the Admiralty. His insistence on discipline and efficiency helped to modernise the fleet in a turbulent age.

In later years he remained a figure of dignity and courage, and the Church of St Michael in Stone keeps his memory alive as a testament to a life of unparalleled maritime service.
