Biography

John Malcolm combined soldierly discipline with a historian’s eye, serving as a diplomat and military officer in India and Persia while recording the tumultuous years he witnessed in detailed memoirs and histories. His books on the rise and fall of Persian dynasties and on the English presence in India offered readers a rare mixture of firsthand observation and thoughtful reflection.

Regarded for his fairness and sense of duty, he left behind a legacy of careful scholarship that enhanced the British public’s insight into distant lands and is commemorated beneath the arches of Westminster Abbey.
