Biography

John Mathews was a man of his time, living through the transformative years of American independence and the establishment of the new nation. He maintained his place in his community throughout a period of considerable change and development.

Mathews was laid to rest at Circular Congregational Church Burying Ground in Charleston, South Carolina, a final resting place for many notable citizens of the colonial and early American periods. His life connected him to the vibrant history of the Low Country.
