Biography
John Muir, born in 1838, found early solace outdoors and devoted a lifetime to exploring the Sierra Nevada and other wilderness that stirred his imagination. His writings, journals, and tireless expeditions not only captured the wonder of the high country but inspired readers across the nation to value the natural world.
As a founder of the Sierra Club and a persistent voice for establishing national parks, he worked with lawmakers and ordinary citizens alike to ensure that towering forests and alpine meadows would be preserved for future generations. Though he has rested since 1914 at Muir-Strentzel Hanna Cemetery, his living legacy is felt wherever wild places remain protected.
