John Ramsay McCulloch
1789–1864 (age 75)
Biography
John Ramsay McCulloch spent his life translating the abstract precepts of political economy into accessible treatises for merchants and lawmakers, his Principles of Political Economy and extensive reviews making him one of the foremost interpreters of Adam Smith for the new industrial age.
He took great pride in gathering the statistics that informed the Board of Trade and used that data to argue for free trade and sound fiscal policy, leaving behind a corpus of published registers that guided ministers and students long after his death.
