Biography
John Reese Kenly combined a respected legal practice with a willingness to lead men in the field when his country needed it, commanding Maryland volunteers in the Civil War and later rising to brigadier general of volunteers. His calm demeanor and measured judgment helped keep units together during some of the war's most testing days.
When the guns fell silent he returned to Baltimore, resuming his work as an attorney, advising civic causes, and remaining a steady presence for younger lawyers who sought his counsel.
