Biography

John Rollin Ridge, the son of Cherokee leader Major Ridge, became the first Native American novelist with the publication of The Life and Adventures of Joaquin Murrieta, bringing a powerful blend of storytelling and social commentary to readers on both sides of the continent.

As a journalist and editor he continued to champion Cherokee rights, bore witness to the challenges of Reconstruction, and used his pen to argue for justice while remaining mindful of his people's losses and hopes.
