Biography

John Russell Bartlett devoted his life to the study of history and antiquities, compiling dictionaries of Americanisms and serving as U.S. Commissioner of Patents before taking on stewardship of Rhode Island’s literary treasures. His meticulous research preserved early American culture for future generations.

His scholarly curiosity and civic-mindedness made him a trusted figure in Providence, and he was laid to rest at Swan Point Cemetery, where his contributions to historical memory are still honored.
