Biography
John Stoughton Newberry (1826-1887) built successful enterprises in shipping and manufacturing before serving Michigan in Congress, where he promoted harbor improvements and fair trade that benefited many along the Great Lakes.
He continued to support charitable causes and looked for common ground in increasingly complicated debates, and he too is laid to rest at Elmwood Cemetery where his record of civility is still recalled.
