Biography

Chief John Tortes Meyers, born 1880, made his mark as one of the most graceful catchers in early major league history, catching for the New York Giants during their championship campaigns and earning wide respect for his handling of pitchers and steady demeanor. As one of the few Native American players of his era, he carried himself with quiet dignity, helping to pioneer a path for future generations during a time when baseball was expanding beyond traditional boundaries.

After his playing days he remained connected to the game and to his hometown, offering mentorship to youngsters and reminding them that courage and integrity mattered as much as a batting average. Green Acres Memorial Park and Mortuary now holds his ashes, a place where fans can pause to honor a player who bridged cultures through the national pastime.
